Okay why do kids (and some adults) do this? They cut right to the center of a fresh piece of paper instead of starting on the sides. There has to be a phycological reason this happens. Do they not have the ability to reason this all the way through at the elementary school level? It really freaks me out every time it happens. For years now I make sure I start off with a cutting lesson, even 5th grade gets to hear the "start on the side" speech...and every year I still have that one kid that cuts straight to the center and throws the rest in the trash.....WHY?!?!?!
I went to Walmart to buy Sharpies and this is what I saw....my first thought as an art teacher was "should I clean that up"? Even though I did not do it. My second thought was "wow I am glad I do not have to clean that up"! I do not know about you but I do not allow glitter in my art room. My first art director told us about Glitter lung. I am not sure if that is true anymore but she thought it was so and now that image has stuck with me all these years. So I Just Say No to glitter.

DeleteStudents cutting out of the center of the paper is a huge pet peeve of mine!
ReplyDeleteI have my adults students doing the same thing! I realized cutting on the edge is something that has to be taught.
