Primary Colors in Art by 1st Grade...

After looking at the works of Mondrian and Miro and learning about the primary colors (red, yellow and blue) 1st grade created there own work of art.

I start by giving the kids only black paint and ask them to draw lines and shapes that express themselves. We put the paintings on the drying rack and wait for next week...

Then we add in the primary colors (red, yellow and blue)

Our inspiration pieces...

And sometimes if you are a brave teacher....Basquiat.
Just make sure to preview his work before showing to the kids.

I just love but we have a no weapons policy in our district.

1st Grade Piet Mondrian in crayon (or watercolor)...

After looking at the work of Piet Mondrian and learning the primary colors (red, yellow and blue), students used a ruler and a black crayon to create rectangles and squares on their paper.
Then they painted some of the boxes they created blue, yellow and red. We also left some blank like Mondrian.

I only give the kids the primary colors.
I use to give them a full color tray and we sometimes ended up with purple Mondrian's....

When the work was dry I gave them 1/2 inch x 12 inch long black strips of construction paper to cover their crayon marks with.

Students will have to cut the strips to fit some of the lines.

Some classes used water colors and...

Some used crayons. No reason, I just wanted to see which worked best.
I like them both for different reasons!

Kindergarten Mondrian Fish...

After looking at the work of Piet Mondrian kindergarden created Mondrian Fish and added a texture rub for the water.
First you draw the fish to fill the whole paper using a black crayon.
Then fill the fish with Mondrian style lines using a ruler.

When the fish is complete place a texture rub plate under the paper and add the water.
