This is one of my favorite things to teach. It is just so cute and fun and the kids get so creative with it.
This year I was asked to teach a workshop for the classroom teachers in my district.
The workshop was creating journals the teachers could easily teach to their kids.
This lesson is a great way to inspire writers.
I do this project with 5th grade.
Start by measuring out 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch sheets of lined notebook paper.
You can cut out as many sheets as you think you will need. I usually use 6 sheets.
Set your notebook paper aside for later.
Make sure your milk box is clean. I collected 30 from the kitchen 7 years ago and I am still using the same ones. Simple cut off the top of the box and then
the kids can trace around the form. You will need to use card stock paper for this project.
After tracing the box cut out the house.
Fold the paper at the at the bottom of the 3 points, where the slanted edge meets the straight edge. The paper will fold up just like the real milk box.
Now you can decorate your house.
Using a hole punch, add a brad were the 2 open sides come together.
On the other side opposite the brad poke a hole and add some ribbon or yarn.
This will tie your door shut. The brad will look like a door knob.
If you do not have a brad you can use stickers to keep you house shut.
Next you will trace around a 3 x 5 index card. You can use the same piece of card stock as the house or students can trade with each other so their roof and house will be different colors.
Lay the lined notebook paper on top of the card stock, you just punch out 2 holes in the middle.
Fold the card stock and the papers in 1/2 and tie a ribbon through the holes.
This will be the room of the house.
Inside the roof is where students will write their stories.
I keep a large selection of stuff...stickers, scrapbook paper, old magazines, etc...
