Today's Art Room Report...

Day 24...
A really awesome 1st grade name accordion fold project. I love the ways these turned out but wow...we use a lot of tape! But it was worth it to see their faces light up when they set up their projects on the table.

This is art work obviously done by Nick. Nick did this lovely self-portrait almost 3 minutes after I just went over the rule about not writing or drawing on the tables. When I asked him why he chose to draw on the table even after I had so eloquently covered all the classroom rules, one of which was to not draw on the tables...Nick answered "I am new here and no one talks to me and I am sad, this is me being sad".  Broke my heart just enough to not write him up! We did have a talk about the appropriate way to express one's self in art class, then I helped him make his own portfolio to draw on any time he needed to.

To try and help Nick with his friend dilemma we played "Ask the Painting" game. This is a game where one person selects an art work from my collection of art cards and carries it around the room as if the holder of the work was the actual painting and students are allowed to ask the painting a question about it's self. I let Nick be a painting so he would have a chance to talk to his class mates. He selected Napoleon Crossing the Alps  a portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte by Jacques-Louis between 1801 and 1805.
I love it, maybe he was trying to say something about his strong true nature, the one that he really wanted the other students to see!

  1. Ugh those kinds of comments break your heart! And then you wonder if it's true, or if Nick did something, or if really kids are ignoring him, and then you want to take him home and arrange play dates ;)

  2. That story about Nick makes me want to weep, what a sad sad story. I hope he grows up to be very creative and successful!
